Siena's lands
Val D'Elsa
The Val D'Elsa area reaches out from Siena to Florence around the traces of the old Francigena road. Art and architecture mark this area made of medieval villages, towers and fortresses of great charm. From Casole, with its tower of the Rocca, to Monteguidi and Colle Val d'Elsa (a great producer of cristal); from Monteriggioni (with its old striking walls still intact) to the Cassero of Poggibonsi (a fortresses of the Medici family of the 15th century); from Radicondoli to San Gimignano (Unesco world heritage centre with its 12 towers).
The Chianti is the most famous wine produced in the whole area and the Vernaccia of S. Gimignano, even quoted in the Dante's Divine Comedy, is the first Italian wine to get the DOC certificate.
